Laser Scanning at Atlanta Athletic Club

Atlanta Athletic Club is currently preparing to host the 2011 PGA Championship. Part of this preparation involved the repair of two greenside sinkholes.  DTC and our partners at LandAir Surveying and Wolverton and Associates were contracted to help the club locate the cause of these sink holes using ground penetrating radar (GPR) and laser scanning technology.  Never heard of laser scanning? A Ground penetrating Radar (GPR) unit was walked over the green, enabling us to "see" the location of the under green drainage.  This was marked on the green with pin flags.

A Laser scan was then taken of the green, capturing points every 1/4" in a 360 degree by 300 yard "dome" around the green.

This is the point cloud created from the laser scan. It is a completely accurate digital representation of what is on site at the time of the scan.

The location and depth of pipes are inserted into the point cloud, enabling us to see what is going on underneath the green.

The digital point cloud model is transformed into a two dimensional paper survey, and then given to the client.  The client also receives a copy of the point cloud model - which is a permanent digital record of on-site conditions.
