Laser Scanning at Stegeman Coliseum Wireframe model of proposed curtain wall merged with point cloud of existing structure.
The University of Georgia is currently expanding Stegeman Coliseum, its basketball arena, to allow more room for pedestrian circulation in the fan concourse. The cornerstone of this expansion involves hanging a glass curtain wall on either side of the arena. This curtain wall needed to be custom designed and engineered to work with the existing roof overhang. Since the building was constructed in 1964, there were no accurate as-built plans of the existing roof. Without some sort of as-built survey, the engineers and architects could only guess as how to best fit the proposed and existing structures together.
The UGA Campus Architects contacted DTC about conducting a laser scan as-built of the coliseum roof. Working with its surveying partner, LandAir Surveying of Georgia, DTC was able to obtain a completely accurate and geo referenced scan of each coliseum entrance, providing the design team with a full set of northing, easting, and elevation coordinates for every two feet along the edge of the roof overhang. This information was then shared with the project design team, architect Collins Cooper Carusi and curtain wall engineer Novum Structures. Novum Structures provided a wireframe model of the proposed curtain wall which DTC and LandAir were then able to insert into the point cloud model.
